Laura Hart is the Executive Director of the Salida Circus Outreach Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing enriching circus arts experiences that build self-esteem, foster community connections, and develop new skills for participants of all ages. With a strong background in early childhood education, she currently works as an educator in Buena Vista, Colorado, where she resides. Laura is a devoted mother of two children, Ashley and Adam, who share her passion for circus arts and often perform alongside her.
Originally from the San Diego, California, area, Laura grew up immersed in the world of dance as the daughter of a dance instructor, spending much of her time in studios honing her skills. During high school and college, she excelled as a competitive co-ed cheerleader and high school gymnast, which helped her develop advanced tumbling, flying, and acrobatic abilities. Her journey with the Salida Circus began when a friend invited her to a workshop for her then three- and five-year-old children, taught by founder Jennifer Dempsey. What started as a fun activity for her kids quickly captivated Laura herself; the entire family joined classes, and she fell in love with the circus community.
Drawing on her athletic background, Laura began training in circus arts, soon transitioning into teaching and performing. Her dedication led to roles as a trainer, then Buena Vista coordinator, and ultimately Executive Director, where she now leads the organization founded 17 years ago (as of 2024) with over 60 members involved in community classes, outreach programs, shows, and international collaborations. She has traveled, taught, and performed internationally, including in Ireland—where she took students on a trip through various circus schools—and in Palestine, including a performance at the Bethlehem International Performing Arts Festival. Under her leadership, the circus adapted innovatively during the pandemic by shifting to online mentorship, Zoom classes, and live-streamed shows to maintain connections despite physical distancing. She has also implemented online platforms for event booking, performer shifts, class registration, and payments to streamline operations.
She emphasizes the heart and soul of the organization, creating an atmosphere of purpose, ownership, and joy that empowers participants to make lasting memories and embark on “smile-filled journeys.”
