Kathalene and Zeta Murphy are the founders of Rusty’s Rescue Ranch, a nonprofit dedicated to rescuing at-risk dogs and helping pet owners avoid surrendering their animals. Inspired by a lifelong passion for animal welfare, Kathalene built a strong foundation in veterinary care and science, earning a degree in Biochemistry from NC State University before beginning a career as a chemist.
In 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic altered plans for veterinary school, Kathalene launched Rusty’s Rescue Ranch with just $500. Since then, the organization has grown significantly, rescuing more than 2,000 dogs and managing approximately $200,000 in annual donations to support animal transport, medical care, and spay/neuter initiatives. The rescue is known for helping dogs often considered aggressive or unadoptable, successfully rehabilitating more than 230 animals that had been given little chance of finding homes. Kathalene and Zeta have also expanded their mission into professional dog training, working directly with owners to address behavioral challenges and prevent unnecessary surrenders. Through their dedication and hands-on approach, they continue to create second chances for dogs and the families who love them while advocating for a more compassionate approach to animal welfare.
